Making a Mark

- March 25: An exhibit of art created by children touched by cancer. Sponsored by the Texas Children’s Cancer Center at Houston, the annual collection of art created by children from around the world is part of a very intensive art therapy program at the hospital.

Children who have cancer, or have siblings with cancer, are invited to make and submit a piece of art to Houston. After a judging, the art is hung in the Texas Children’s Hospital and then sent on the road for viewing at other museums and hospitals around the country.

African-American Heritage Day

Come explore the Children’s Museum of Virginia, experience West African culture, create souvenirs, see the Hurrah Players in action, interact with the Rhythm Project and learn about the history of Hip Hop - all for less than the price of a movie ticket.
Schedule includes:
• Hurrah Players presents “Andalo’s Motown Review”
• Rhythm Project will lead two 30-minute interactive workshops that teach simple rhythms and dances from West Africa.
• Dray’s DigiFoto Services will set up a mobile, instant print studio where visitors can have their photo taken. The cost is $7.oo. The photo will print as a newspaper headline.
• African American Historical Society will have a tabletop display focusing on the first African-American library in Portsmouth to promote fundraising goals to restore the building.
• Norfolk State University will have tabletop science experiments for children to participate from 12 noon until 4 pm.
• Visitors will make craft souvenirs including raffia coasters, mini shoes and medallions.
• Visitors will take part in “African American Notables Scavenger Hunt”

The Year of the Ox - a Chinese New Year Celebration

Activities include two Lion Dances throughout the museum by the Chinese Community Association of Hampton Roads, traditional brush painting by Shaw-mei Shen, writing your name in Chinese with help from the Organization of Chinese Americans, music and dance performances by the Tidewater Chinese School, as well as create-your-own Chinese New Year crafts.

The Singing Hoosiers

The Singing Hoosiers shine as America's Premiere Collegiate Concert Show Choir. Averaging 115 members, the Singing Hoosiers feature collegiate performers from the world-renowned Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, as well as students with a variety of other majors, from business to chemistry to political science. They perform American popular music, jazz, and Broadway favorites with dazzling choreography, energy, and style.
