12 Historic Squares of High Street

First Friday is a stage for local merchants & restaurants in Portsmouth's Historic Olde Towne and one of the city's most popular evening escapes. Held the first Friday of each month, Olde Towne Portsmouth's thriving arts & antiques community opens it's doors along the 12 historic squares of High Street located between Effingham Street and the riverfront where crowds of casual browsers as well as serious buyers come to each festive event to visit our fine art galleries, quality antique shops and unique specialty stores, some host receptions and art exhibition openings.

First Friday is held each month, rain or shine, year round. There is no admission fee for First Friday - participating galleries are open to the public.

Steeple To Steeple church and synagogue tour

Visit 7 historic Portsmouth Olde Towne churches and the old synagogue. Docents show the treasures and lunch is included. 9 to 2:30.

3rd Annual Olde Towne Fall Crawl

4-9 p.m. The bar tour will visit different bars and restaurants along High St. and Court St. Registration includes wristband good for specials at each establishment, T-shirt, souvenir cup, souvenir magnet, guide map, and other promotional items. Some friendly competitions will be held and prizes awarded. All proceeds benefit a locally founded and nationally recognized charitable organization, Children's Performance Workshops.

20th Annual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race

The race begins in Fells Point, in Baltimore, Maryland, and ends 127 nautical miles down the Chesapeake Bay in Portsmouth, Virginia. Entry is open to all schooner-rigged vessels.

More than 50 schooners participated in the 2008 race. This year's race is the 20th anniversary of the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.

The United States Air Force Band & Singing Sergeants
Free Concert at Willett Hall

8 p.m. This performance represents the final concert for the Washington, D.C. based United States Air Force Band & Singing Sergeants which concludes their national tour.

The Singing Sergeants is the official chorus of the United States Air Force. One of the most versatile and traveled choral organizations, this mixed ensemble is known and respected for its continuing commitment to excellence in vocal performance. The chorus performs a wide range of musical repertoire including opera, traditional and contemporary choral literature, folk songs, pop standards, musical theater and jazz.

Schooner Days

This three day celebration offers numerous maritime-related activities throughout the weekend and is free to the general public unless otherwise noted. Schooner Days promotes Portsmouth’s rich maritime history and brings awareness for the need to preserve and improve the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay.

The Portsmouth waterfront from North Landing to beyond the High Street Landing will be lined with over 50 schooners from around the world. Visitors will have a photo opportunity of the largest collection of schooners in the world. A number of the vessels will be available for visitors to go onboard to see what living and working aboard a schooner is all about. Music is scheduled along the waterfront along with military re-enactors and pirates.

The 29th Annual Olde Towne Ghost Walk

7 p.m.–10:30 p.m. Rain or Shine - On Friday, October 30th, 2008, the ghosts of old will come alive to taunt the imagination and challenge the boundaries of reality. Based on the Jack-the-Ripper Walks in London, participants in the 29th annual Olde Towne GhostWalk will be treated to some of the most haunting stories of Portsmouth’s past. During a guided walking tour, costumed re-enactors tell the tales of the infamous ghosts and haunted houses of Olde Towne Portsmouth, a 20-square block area on the National Register of Historic Places.

Tickets go on sale September 30th at $10 per person. Children carried or in strollers are free. Cash or checks payable to Olde Towne Civic League, are accepted at all advance ticket locations. Credit cards accepted only at the North Street Landing Visitors Center in Portsmouth (at North Street Ferry Landing).
